  1. What is the mail server?
  2. Our mail server is named imt.net, it's IP address is 204.212.40.2.

  3. What is POP and SMTP?
  4. With a POP mail account, your mail is delivered to our mail server, where it is collected until you retrieve it using a mail client.

With SMTP mail forwarding, your mail will go directly to your system. This requires you to be running your own SMTP server software. If your machine is not connected when the mail comes in, our system will wait until you connect, then transfer the mail to you. Running your own SMTP server gives you extra flexibility with your email and is recommended for large sites. But there is the extra overhead of configuring and maintaining your own server as well.

  5. What can I use to read mail?
  6. You can check your mail either using our web-based client (software that uses a web page to manage email) or any program that supports the POP3 protocol to retrieve your mail from our server. You can check your email from a web page by click on the Check Email link at the top of this page. Some examples of email programs that use POP3 protocol are Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape, or Incredimail.

  7. Is there a limit the size of an email that I can send? How about a limit on what I can recieve?
  8. There is not limit to the quantity of messages or file size of any message that you want to send out. Many Internet providers do, however, impose a limit on the total file size that their users may recieve at any one time, generally 2 to 10 megabytes. If the messages that you send out exceed your recipient's mail quota, the message is generally returned back to you.

Internet Montana has placed a 10 megabyte quota on all users' email files. This means that you may recieve any quantity of messages at one time as long as the file size of those messages added together does not exceed 10 megs.

  9. How do I request changes to my mail setup?
  10. To request any changes to your mailbox, please mail support@imt.net. Changes include things like forwarding your mail, adding an additional POP mailbox, etc.

  11. When do changes take effect?
  12. Changes that we make to your mail setup take effect the next time our mail server reloads its configuration. This happens periodically throughout the day.

  13. What is my POP mailbox address?
  14. Your POP mailbox address is always your username followed by "@imt.net". For example, if your username is "jdoe", then your POP address would be "jdoe@imt.net".

  15. What settings should I use if I have my own domain name?
  16. If you have a custom domain name, and we are handling the mail for your domain, then you can receive mail as your username @ your domain name. For example, if your username is "jdoe" and your domain name is "doe.com", then you can use the email address "jdoe@doe.com".

  17. Can I get all the mail for my domain to go to my mailbox?
  18. Yes, if you'd like, we can forward mail for all user names at your domain to your POP mailbox. This is especially useful if you'd like to receive mail sent to reserved names such as "postmaster", "info", or "webmaster".

  19. Will you forward my mail to another account?
  20. Yes, we'd be happy to forward your mail to another account. Just contact support to have this set up.

  21. What should I do if someone mails me a giant file I can't download?
  22. Some mail clients have problems receiving large pieces of mail. If you have this problem, we can delete it from your mailbox.

    Top

  23. How long is my mail held?
  24. Mail that is delivered to your POP mailbox is held indefinately, until your mail software retrieves it and removes it from the server.

If you are set up for SMTP mail delivery and your system is not reachable, your mail will be spooled on our server for up to 15 days. Our server will try to reach yours every 15 minutes. If you are unreachable for 3 days, a warning message is sent to the people trying to reach you. After 15 days, the mail will be bounced back to the sender.

  25. Can I get additional mailboxes?
  26. Additional email only accounts are available for a monthly fee of $1/each. At this time there is a limit of five extra email boxes per full account.

If you need more than five mailboxes for your account, we suggest you set up your own mail server, and have your mail delivered via SMTP. There are mail server packages available for most computer types.

Also, there are situations in which you want to receive mail for multiple users at your domain, but it is OK for this mail to go into a single mailbox on our system. We can set this up for you at no extra charge. What we normally do in this situation is deliver mail for all user names in your domain to your POP mailbox on our server. Just ask, and we'll set this up.

  27. My connection keeps hanging up whenever I check my email. How do I stop that?
  28. Some mail programs are automatically set to hang up your Internet connection when it's done checking for email. This has the advantage of saving you time on your connection, since you don't need to be connected to the Internet to read or write emails, once your messages are downloaded to your computer. However, for some people this is an inconvenience, considering the time it takes to dial up again. Simply contact our technical support and we'll help you find that setting in your email program options in order to turn it off.

  29. I can connect to the Internet, but my email keeps asking me for my password.
  30. There is a 10 megabyte limit on our users' email files. If someone sent you one or more large files, your file size can add up fast. If this has happened, and your email has exceeded 10 megabytes, the mail server will get 'stuck', issuing a password error the next time you try to check your email. Simply contact our technical support and we can temporarily increase your quota so you may retrieve your email.
