  1. How does Webcelerate's solution compare to DSL or cable modem?
  2. Webcelerate Accelerator is an affordable software-only solution designed to significantly enhance Web access over low-speed (less than 200 kbps/second) connections. By contrast, DSL and cable modems provide high-speed Internet connectivity using hardware solutions that work with special telephone or cable lines. Accelerated dial up only works to speed up the time that certain content in web pages and emails take to download, while cable and DSl connections speed up all data transfer rates. However, the price for DSL or cable modem is significantly higher than Webcelerate Accelerator. In addition to the higher price, many areas simply do not have DSL or cable Internet service available

  3. How does Webcelerate come up with the up to 5X claim?
  4. Web page performance is measured by the amount of time it takes to download an entire Web page into your browser. So, when comparing the performance improvement delivered by Webcelerate Accelerator with an unaccelerated Internet connection, we configure two identical computers. Both are connected to the Internet at the same dial-up connection speed and both have the same PC and Internet browser configuration. Using an automated browsing measurement tool (i.e. a surfing "bot"), both computers visit the same Web pages multiple times. In order to eliminate variations in download speed caused by various network factors, we take the average times for downloading the same page with and without Webcelerate Accelerator and compare the two averages in order to determine the improvement factor for a specific Web page (example: www.amazon.com). 5X represents the high-end of the frequently measured averaged results.

  5. What types of Web content does Webcelerate accelerate?
  6. Webcelerate accelerates web page text (including plain text, HTML, and javascript) and the most common forms of graphics: GIF, animated GIF, JPEG images, and Flash. Webcelerate also accelerates the download of other forms of Internet content using the built-in Download Manager. Using the Download Manager streaming media (video and audio) and binary file downloads, including PDF files and executable programs will download to your PC faster. Secure pages, such as those used for online banking and credit card forms will not be accelerated

  10. If you are using a graphics acceleration option above Level 1 and you want to view the page at original quality. Using Internet Explorer, simply move your mouse over an image on a Web page and click the right mouse button. You'll see two new options, refesh page with full quality, and refresh image with full quality are available. If you are using another browser you will need to temporarily disable Webcelerate -- which you can do from the Webcelerate Accelerator menu, clear your browsers cache, and then reload the page. 11. How do I enable or disable Webcelerate Accelerator?
  12. When Webcelerate Accelerator is enabled, the Webcelerate Accelerator menu will contain a command to "Disable Webcelerate Accelerator". Select this command to disable Webcelerate Accelerator. When disabled, the menu will contain a command to "Enable Webcelerate Accelerator". By default, Webcelerate Accelerator is enabled, meaning that your Internet experience will be accelerated.

When you choose the Disable command, Webcelerate Accelerator will be bypassed, and you will access the Internet at normal speeds. The Disable Webcelerate Accelerator command is useful if you want to evaluate the degree of speed improvement provided by Webcelerate Accelerator. Simply Disable Webcelerate Accelerator and browse for a few minutes; then Enable Webcelerate Accelerator and browse for a few minutes. Your browsing experience should be significantly faster with Webcelerate Accelerator enabled.

You can tell if Webcelerate Accelerator is enabled or not by the state of its Icon in the windows taskbar. If the icon shows a red circle with a line through it then Webcelerate Accelerator is disabled.

  13. How do I uninstall Webcelerate Accelerator?
  14. Restoring a Browser's Proxy Address and Port Number

If you are using Netscape, Opera, or Mozilla, when you stop or uninstall Propel Accelerator you will need to reset proxy settings to their original values (or no values). Until you do this, you will likely not be able to access the Internet. If you are using Microsoft Internet Explorer the uninstall process will reset your proxy settings automatically.

See steps below for instructions on restoring Netscape's original proxy settings after uninstalling Propel Accelerator. These instructions (in general terms) also apply to Opera and Mozilla.

    1. Click on the Netscape Edit menu.
    2. Select Preferences...
    3. Click on the mark next to the Advanced category or simply double-click on Advanced.
    4. Click on Proxies. If there was a proxy address in use prior to installing Propel Accelerator, [Netscape 4.7 only: click View... first] enter that address and port number. Otherwise click "Direct Connection to the Internet".
