Chat Speak
There are entire dictionaries written on the various abbreviations and slang used in chat.
The most common symbol, or 'emoticon', is the smiley face or :)
There are several variations based off of the smiley face to emote, including:, :P to indicate sticking your tongue out, : )) as a big smile, and : ( to indicate a frown.
"LOL", stands for "Laughing Out Loud", just as "rofl" stands for "Rolling On The Floor Laughing". Then there's "roflmao" as "Rolling On The Floor Laughing My…", well, you get the picture.
Abbreviations can be used either in uppercase or lowercase letters.
If you're not sure what someone meant, it's ok to ask.
People generally like to share, particularly if they just made something up from scratch.
You can study up on chat slang by doing a simple search on the web for "chat dictionary", or else something similar.
