File Transfer Protocol

FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, is a communications procedure governing the transfer of files from one computer to another over a network, or in this case, the Internet. Internet Montana only allows access to its server to its own customers. Meaning, a customer must use their Internet Montana dial-up connection in order to obtain permission to FTP to the server. If you wish to use a broadband connection to FTP to the Internet Montana server, we can add an exception for your specific connection if you can supply technical support with a static IP that has reverse DNS. (Your broadband connection provider controls the reverse DNS)

How to Post your Pages on the Internet

  1. Connect to the Internet as you would normally.
  2. Start a File Transfer Program (FTP) on your computer
For Windows, try WS FTP (download and instructions)
For Macintosh, try Fetch (download and instructions)
  3. Connect to imt.net using your username and password.
  4. Change your directory to public_html
  5. Transfer your files to our server from your computer
  6. Test your pages with your Web browser by specifying the address as follows (where username is your regular CustomerID):
    http://www.imt.net/~username/
  7. NOTE: This will load the front page of your website if it is called index.html otherwise you will need to specify the address as:

    http://www.imt.net/~username/filename.html.

If you are using Microsoft FrontPage

To publish your web, the appropriate web site to enter will be: ftp://www.imt.net/public_html When you click OK, FrontPage will then connect to the Internet and prompt you for your username and password.

Our web server is Unix based, and hence does not allow Microsoft FrontPage extensions. However, most web pages designed in FrontPage will work fine without FrontPage extensions enabled on the server. The only pages that may be affected are web-based forms, such as a comment form, or a page counter. These may be substituted by using the cgi scripts available on our server:
