Frequent Disconnections

And other generic connection problems

Who cares -why- you keep getting cut off, what matters is how to make it stop! Well, ok, if you want to know why, check out Modemsite.com's article at http://modemsite.com/56k/disconnects.asp

Ultimately, we have found that adding an init string to your modem properties fixes nearly all frequent disconnection problems:

How to change the Modem Initialization String in W95/W98:

  1. Open My Computer, then go into Dial-Up Networking. (If a Dial-Up Networking folder is not visible in My Computer, use this method: From the Start button, choose Programs, then Accessories, then Dial-Up Networking.)
  2. Right-click on your connection icon and choose Properties.
  3. Click the Configure button.
  4. Click the Connection tab.
  5. Click the Advanced button.
  6. Enter the init string in the Extra Settings field.
For HSP modems, we recommend using ATN0S37=14 (where the 0 is a zero)
For all other modems, try AT&F&C1&D2
  7. Click OK to save changes.

If you are using Windows 98, you will need to restart your computer before the new settings take effect.

How to change the Modem Initialization String in Windows 2000 and XP:

  1. Go to your Control Panel
  2. Doubleclick on "Phone and Modem Options".
  3. Click the "Modems" tab.
  4. Highlight your modem listing and click the "Properties" button near the bottom.
  5. Click the Advanced tab.
  6. Enter the init string in the Extra Settings field:
For HSP modems, we recommend using ATN0S37=14 (where the 0 is a sero)
For all other modems, try AT&F&C1&D2
  7. Click OK to save changes.

Do commands in Extra Settings add to or replace the existing string?

They add to the existing string in the .inf file. However, if the string you enter contains any &F command, it essentially replaces the existing string, because the &F commands reset the modem to the factory settings.
